Journal of a Chicago Northshore Police Officer

Chapter 64

Burt Reynolds is in Town

Some names used are fictitious in this true story

Phone rings at the Winnetka Police Department; 'Ring.' 'Ring.'

"Winnetka police department, dispatcher Ed Shears speaking." "Hello Ed, this is Burt Reynolds speaking, do you know who I am?" The telephone call had interrupted Ed's dinner at his desk, but he was so excited it did not make any difference to him at this point.

"Well, yes sir of course I know who you are, what can I do for you?" Ed answered. "Ed I don't know if you are aware, but I am out on the town with Mary Ann Stevens, who is the sister of Joe and Bill Sumner. I thought it may be fun to come up to Winnetka tonight and play a little joke on Mary Ann, her brothers, and my driver." Burt said.

"Yes, I heard from Joe Sumner who works here on our police department that she had a date with you, but was not sure what night." Ed responded to the question. "

Say Burt, can I ask you a question?" "Of course Ed, what is it?" Burt answered. "I had heard that your father was a Dade County Sheriff back a few years ago, is that correct?" Ed asked. "Yes, how did you know? It is so nice of you to ask about my father." Burt said. "I have read a few books and other stories about your father and what a great job he did there." Ed said. "Thanks again Ed and I will give him your best wishes next time I see him." Burt answered.

"Now, getting back to the fun in Winnetka tonight. I have rented a limo and I thought after we finish dinning here in Evanston, we may drive up to your village and have a little fun with Mary Ann and a few of your officers." Burt said.

"Well, what sort of fun and how may I help you Burt?" Ed asked. "I thought that maybe we would arrive at a certain location and have one or two of your police cars make a stop on the limo. Then have us get out of the car... you know hands in the air, search us, handcuffs and the whole bit, what do you think? Burt asked. As he chuckled. (As only Burt could do.)

"Hey. That sounds like a lot of fun, wait let me check with Lt. Elains, he would have to clear all of this, hold on Burt!" Ed said. 'Click'. The phone connection is broken. "Yeah. Hello this is Lt. Elains, hello? Hello? Anyone there?" "Ed what the hell kind of bull shit are you pulling here, I don't have time for this kind of crap!" The Lt. asked. The Lt. pissed and red faced left the dispatchers office slamming the door as he left.

Ring! Ring! "Hello Kenilworth police department, Sergeant Bill Sumner." "Hey, Bill this is Joe, guess who just called our station?" Joe Sumner asked his older brother Bill. "Oh, I don't know, Burt Reynolds?" Bill answered. "How the hell did you know?" Joe asked. "Well, really it was Fullington that made the call, it was not Burt!" Bill told Joe. "Bull shit it was Burt Reynolds. Ed spoke to him and they talked about his father being a Sheriff, and about Mary Ann, how did Fullington know all of that?" Joe asked. "Because when I came to work tonight I told Fullington about her date with Burt, and Fullington wanted to play a joke on you guys and made the call!" Bill answered. "Well, you tell Fullington I don't think that is funny, not even a little bit!" Joe shot back at Bill. "Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha." Bill roared with deep belly laughter into the mouthpiece of the phone, while talking to Joe.

As I made my exit from the Chief's office Sergeant Bill Sumner stood up and bowed down to me and said, excellent job Burt, you will get an Oscar for that performance!"

The guys at Winnetka Police Department were a little pissed at me for a few hours, but it blew over and everything was back to normal again. After all policeman have a since of humor too. Or at least most of them do.

Oh yeah, Mary Ann had a great time with Burt that night on their date and she laughed when her brothers told her the story.

Did Burt ever find out about it? No, I don't think so. Hey, that could have been a great movie. You think?

Mary Ann had watched a television talk show when Burt Reynolds was on as a guest, and she had found out a secret. It was not well known to the public, but Burt liked to go out on dates with big women. Mary Ann was what you may call, a big and beautiful woman. Somehow she was able to contact Burt or someone on Burt's staff and did in fact get a date with him.

Burt Reynolds was not married during the time that he and Mary Ann went out on their date.
