The Reunion
by Kay Lee Kelly
copyright 05-14-2002

Age Rating: 1 to 127

The Reunion

The missing places at the table,
Gone the young, strong and able.
What they told us was a lie,
Not good enough for a last good-bye.

The time spent waiting at the gate,
no one asked, why do we wait.
Sometimes the price seem just too high,
watching all your good friends die.
When the next reunion comes around
I will be out of town .

I will not go to sit and cry
Consider this my last good-bye
I shall not go and find
we , the few left behind.

The Back Story:
After the last reunion I spent the next year
trying to get the pictures out of my head.
The missing in action from the 'V' war
their pictures for us to see.
They in full dress ~ metals ~ flags.
This is not how I wanted to remember them.
Eight, gone, from class of forty-six.
The ones married young, thought they would be together
Forever, most of them now, not....
Two of our bright and most successful
had committed suicide.
My friends and I clung to each other in dismay
Maybe we all had our hopes too high,
expectations out of proportion to
reality.
The King and Queen were still together ~ sad ~ bitter,
the class clown, now a surgeon, somber ~ reflective.
The most likely to succeed, owned a used car lot.
So many scattered ~ nothing to share with each other.
But maybe we did not try hard enough to break
through the time and space barrier.
My English lit. teacher, retired, he could still quote from
my poems, and had saved everything I had published.
He told me my success was part of his. We both cried.

Today;
My five best friends are gone now,
we had shared everything in life, children, and wayward husbands
Sickness, death of family ~ children.

Bitter Sweet.
No encore.
Friends;
They come and they go.
To teach to assist and help you grow.
Friends for a season,
A short time or long,
After a while they just move along.
Friends for a lifetime,
Will always be there,
To love, to cherish and to share.
Bittersweet memories
Blind love finds a way
Our lifetime friends will always stay.

Now;
I am the one left behind.

This reunion sounds like life in all it's twists and turns..powerful and emotional. Gives me pause to think of the family reunion I'll be attending next month.

Kay Lee, this is so moving...your emotions come through loud and clear, and it's a poignant tribute to those long ago days....I love the way you've blended the different aspects here -- works great!

I will be attending my 40th reunion this year and judging from my husbands last year there will be some empty spaces, but just remember that those who are left are the ones who can still comfort and care for the others. It is important to enjoy the ones still here. Hope I don't have too many tears this year. A great poem.
