Distant Friends

I walked up a mountain today
With every step I took
I thought of you
In my heart you were beside me
We were laughing
At the silliness of walking in the snow
In the middle of April
I ducked
From the snowball you threw at me
Laughing
I made one larger
And threw it back
Missing you as you tucked behind a tree
Sticking out your tongue
Daring me to try again
So I ran, slipping on the rocks
Hearing you gasp
Slow down, you yelled
As my foot slipped off the edge
And I lost my balance
Just as I thought I was ready to fall
I felt your strong arms come around me
Falling together in the snow
Laughing as you rolled on top
Tickling me, then stuffing snow down my shirt
Then you jump up and walk quickly up the trail
Ducking as the snowballs pelt at your back
We reached the top
Becoming silent
Overcome by the beauty stretched out far below
The lake, still frozen over with cracks beginning to show signs of breaking up
The mountains, in the distance, still covered in spring snow
Traffic moving like ants on the distant road below
You pull me in, and I
I simply stay quiet
Secure in your arms
Knowing there is nothing more than true friendship
The kind that no one writes about in love songs because its simply not romantic
Yet is very deep, deeper than a true love song
I closed my eyes
Resting my head upon your shoulder
And when I woke
You are gone and the wind blew strong
I pull my jacket close, and tuck down my hat
I wipe my eyes, moist from the wind
And from my heart
And sigh
I walked up a mountain today
And with every step I took
I thought of you
And I wondered
Did you think of me today too

This actually paused my breathing and when you wiped your tears... so did I.

Thank you everyone! This poem was written for a very good on-line friend who I've yet to meet. I wrote it after I actually hiked up a mountain, one spring day and sent it off to him. He was very touched. One day, we hope to meet and until then, we always have "the hike."

Excellent piece, Bev. Good to see you're here, too. Thanks for your comment on my poem. Bunny

Many good friends of mine live far away. I think of them often and wonder the same things.
