The Harvest of Obsidian Moans
by William Robbins
copyright 05-26-2002

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Sitting in an old rocker and intoxicated by a lavender scent,
I sipped from a slender, glass goblet of ice cold lemonade
and chatted the dialogue of crops
while savoring the courtly hospitality and rustic allure
of an aged farmer and his wife dressed as a bride and groom.
In the repose of an early evening country’s opiate
as I was cherishing the affable serenade of a cricket choir,
my host and his spouse suddenly tied rectangular pieces of cardboard
to their heads with red and black checkerboard tablecloths.
My anxiety simmered and nearly boiled,
but I was able to restrain and subdue the panic volcano
until I lifted my eyes to see an immense, drab gray cruise ship
steaming across a nearby lake.
Once it rose into the sky and disappeared inside some clouds
my eyes begged from my host for some miniscule respite of reason.
He and his mate simply shrugged and replied, "it happens every night."
Wincing, I pondered if the lemonade could so corrupt reality,
sweating and shuddering
my mind wrapped itself in the gauze of rapture
when I opened my eyes to the feel of bed sheets.

This must have been a vivid dream for you. I always think of my best poetry just when I am about to go to sleep. I enjoyed this very much.

What a startling dream sequence, William! You have an amazing way with imagery. I like the inserts of casualness -- and the intriguing title doesn't give away the ending.
A super read!
