Women with sagging breasts
And the slack-muscled stomachs
Of child bearing-
Sink into the scalding water
Of the on-sen.
The heat and steam
Enter them.
As once they allowed only a
Lover to touch them.
Surrounding their bodies
In warm mineral wetness
They drift off into a heat
Haze
Cheating husbands,
Uncaring children,
Old age weakening their bones,
Forgotten.
Like babies, they
Float in a womb of womanhood
Cleansing away reality
Poising on the edge of consciousness
They drift; and then-
Rising as from a dream
They dress, while billows of the past
Trail behind them over the tile floor.
