Goodbye Lady Lee
He stepped off the porch, into a slate gray day,
he will never walk his land again, he has to go away.
Under the action hammer, he will sell the ranch,
now all his dreams will end, he’s waiting in a trance.
Walks down to the old barn, to feed the Lady Lee,
she is a roping horse, the best you’ll ever see.
The cowboy bought her when she was very small
long legs, dish face, she didn’t look like very much at all.
Then came the day, she could out-run any colt,
ridding her was like being on a thunder bolt.
Brush in hand he curries, the Lady’s dark red coat,
the tears he cannot stop ~ on her mane they float.
Looking out over the pasture, colored with wild flowers,
out to the prairies hills were you could ride for hours.
Just now understanding youth does not last,
everything he ever loved now lives in the past
~
Goodbye to the dark red mare
nothing left to love or share
losing her is the hardest blow
and knowing that it is time to go.
