The Day the Sun Went Down
Chapter 13
by Susan E. Eskdale (Age: 38)
copyright 06-26-2002

Age Rating: 7 to 127

Shelby awoke with a start, but why – there were not any unusual sounds or sudden stops. After consulting her watch Shelby realised that she couldn’t have been asleep for much more than a half an hour and it didn’t even feel like she had slept at all.

It was one of those sleeps that were riddled with mental challenges; the mathematical formulae were a constant concern throughout her sleep. If it wasn’t bad enough that she thought about the calculations all day now her sleep was being invaded too.

Cleo and Arlington were curled up together, still on Shelby’s lap, using each other’s body as a pillow. Shelby thought how interesting it was that these two virtual strangers would be able to so quickly adjust to this new situation when she was having difficulty determining if this was actually happening or if this was some elaborate practical joke.

Cleo slowly wakened to Shelby’s touch and appreciatively purred her greeting to Shelby. There was a certain comfort that her captors had cared enough about her comfort and her companion that they would retrieve Cleo from her house. Based on that fact alone she would have to believe that Mr. T. was being genuine in his concern for her safety.

How could she possibly continue working on the calculations without the familiar surroundings of her office? Whenever she was stuck for an answer she simply had to stare at her wall and the wall would display the solution for her consideration. Working under a new pressure of world peace and safety from terrorist attacks was doing nothing for her ability to clearly focus on solving any complicated formulae.

Nearly an hour had passed since Shelby woke from her restless sleep when the Chevy stopped abruptly. Shelby waited and tried to commit any sounds to memory, it might be useful for her if she ever needed to figure out where she was. Somewhat unexpectedly Shelby’s door opened displaying her driver, still dressed in complete black attire. It was difficult for Shelby to determine where she was; her captors had purposely made her ‘invisible’ to the eye and in so doing also served to keep Shelby ill-informed of their location.

Shelby thought that she would now get the opportunity to find out who her driver was or at the very least whether the driver was male or female, but the clothing served to keep gender disguised. The driver pointed scooped up Cleo and Arlington putting them back into their cage – confined once again, the frantic meowing began to emanate from the cage. The driver motioned for Shelby to follow the path into the building. Shelby could tell that the car had been parked in an underground parking structure, the echo of her footsteps and the feel of the ground beneath her feet made her even surer that her transfer from vehicle to standing structure had to be done under the cloak of darkness and the condition of ultimate privacy.

Shelby blinked as she entered a brightly lit reception area, it took some time for her eyes to adjust and when they finally did she couldn’t believe her eyes.
