When you go to the supermarket and you go to the meat counter, do you look to see if the hamburger is red and fresh or do you simply grab a package?
When you go to the bookstore to buy a book, do you simply pick one up then take it to the checkout counter?
Would you like to see your stories, poetry or both in a best selling book?
These questions involve quality or a judgment of quality. There are a number of ways to judge quality. If one is talking about hamburger, freshness is the key. For a best-seller, it is quite obviously popularity.
At PnP we have had a system in place for a long time which our readers can use to guage quality and which also is a measure of popularity. At the moment the system doesn't work very well.
Why?
Some tell me they "don't believe in ratings", yet I seriously doubt that they simply grab a package at the meat counter or would buy a book without looking at it and making a value judgment.
They judge with their wallets...
We have monthly contests here at PnP both for Prose and Poetry. At present there are 24 judges. ratings help them make the final decision.
There is a branch of mathematics, Statistics, which deals with these factors. We have warned people here not to take ratings seriously until there are at least ten on a work. That is why there are two numbers in the ratings; number of raters and rating.
Many systems have been tried to increase the number of ratings on works. Some have temporarily helped and some were miserable failures.
Our system now is totally anonymous. One can rate without commenting. This keeps an author guessing; he can never be certain who rated him, even if he does see a comment. A commenter might not have rated while another visitor may have used the "Rate this" link without commenting.
We also have a system where the Author has total control over who can see his ratings. He can keep them to himself, make them public or even hide ratings from himself if he wishes.
In short, there is no reason for not rating.
Presently only members can rate. We could open that to the general public, but that opens up a danger of skewing the results. Another idea is to not allow comments until a rating has been entered. One other way is to tie ratings to submissions, allow one submission for each five ratings made.
Rating, grading is a part of life. We all do it every day in many things. Here at PnP, we need ratings; we need them badly.
Whenever a change is made here, it inevitable provokes anger from a few. But since ratings are so important to our future, it will be necessary to find ways to be sure there are enough of them to mean something. Very likely in the near future we will implement one or more of the above choices.
Help Us Stop Plagiarism -
Nearly all works at PnP are original. However a few people choose to plagiarize.
To check, choose a phrase from the work, then either drag and drop to the search box or copy and paste.
click on search and works at Google will be shown which match. Just to be sure, please do this before
you recommend or rate the work highly...
Bob I realize your trying very hard to keep this sight open. I really feel that your intentions are good. I'm soory for any kinda friction I caused when I first came in. I understand more now what is going on. I'll help to keep things rolling smoothly as best as I can. I would eventually like to help the sight by buying books a little farther on down the road. If I can help make things any smoother let me know. And again I apologize. DIXIE LEE
I agree with Lary, it is difficult, and if you read others' comments, it can sway you to thinking you are not judging well.
Nominating something because you think it is excellent would be a fantastic idea, too bad we can't bookmark somehow ( I am not looking to make this harder for you, Bob, honest) so we can compare our favourites, there are several wonderful writers, to narrow it down to a winner a month is almost a shame.....
Well, I see that this hasn't had that many ratings. Bob, I applaud your efforts and the time you take to explain everything. I don't really see a problem with the ratings, especially since it is anonymous now anyhow. I think you have a wonderful site here, and I am so pleased to be a member. Thank you!
Robert, the reads should normally be bigger than comments since visitors can read but not comment. In fact this may give some idea of how many visitor are not members. Allowing them to comment is questionable. I feel that we'd get more flaming this way, which is simply hurtful and harmful.
Still, one can see on author's pages how actively each comments and rates. As a writer myself I read extensively. Those who are not are cheating themselves and will not likely become better writers.
Classically at PnP I've been on everyone's case to be critical. In fact I set it so a '5' can only be given if the rater gives a written reason why. (in the rating comment box) Some back-slapping is inevitable. But if we can get the number of ratings up, that will be over-ridden by sheer numbers.
I'd like to set up a more thorough rating system. i.e. grade content and executution. But if it gets too complex then people will dislike it and avoid rating even more.
Unfortunately, without some help from a numerical guide, a simple recommendation for poem of the month would just swamp the judges with even more works to sort through... With both maybe.
Oh dear, I should not have stopped to read this before the poetry, Bob...now I'm sidetracked, LOL!
I was briefly at a couple of sites where everybody rates.
I thought the number of top marks given was sickening -- it was obvious that friends-help-friends and give each other high marks regardless of the quality of the work.
If I felt I had to rate, I would not enjoy reading....half of me would be sitting back with a critical eye, judging. (And I've been an editor, so I'm a tough judge!)
I guess I didn't read the fine print here to realize that ratings are at least partly the basis for the contest entries....
Have you considered having a box which says "enter this poem for contest" so when we come across one we really like we could do this?
