The forest is ablaze
Smoke rises erratically
On heated currents.
For miles it smears the sky
With a sooty smudge
It is as if a giant piece of reddish chalk
Was rubbed over the heavens with abandon.
Fingers of flame reach
Out to claim ponderosa and jack pine
Sage ignites with the suddenness of grease.
The inferno leaps and shakes itself
Throwing embers and ash
High into the choking air.
It crackles and pops
An untamed beast wrathfully
Eating away at foliage.
Greedy for fuel, it
Forages this way and that
For brush and sticks.
Buildings in the path of
This intense destruction
Are devoured totally
Ruins of brick and stone
Chimneys and patios,
All that remain.
Leaving only smoke and tears.
We have had severe forest fires in our area this summer and people have lost everything they owned. I felt I had to try to write a poem about this destruction of homes and forests.
