When I Was A Child
When I was a child I learned about blue tailed lizards
that ran through wild flowers and slipped out of sight.
I didn’t like to eat fried chicken gizzards
but I loved tomatoes my Grandma canned just right.
I was afraid of spiders and copperhead snakes
I played with worms and bugs and tadpoles in the lake.
Later I learned to hunt ‘possum on a dark night.
You couldn’t find them when the moon was bright.
But best of all I learned about God, and manners, and how to be polite
I learned about baseball, football and a good country song
I learned the value of a friend and the peace of the seaside
I was taught the difference between right and wrong.

Poetry does not have to rhyme. If you force a rhyme just for the sake rhyming, it comes off as phony. This poem is very creative, and introspective, but try not to force your rhymes, it takes away from the content.
You just took me back to my childhood I remember all these things as well Thank you for the wonderful read. I am still afraid of copperheads.
But knowing my aim is now better than his, if I see him first, gives my inner relieve.LOL
