I awoke at one in the morning.
Jet lag had me starving
I needed nourishment
To go back to sleep.
A banana lay on the counter-
Part of a new bunch
All yellow and green.
I broke it from its brothers.
A loud snap breaking
The early morning silence.
The smell of banana oil
Filled my nose.
I slit the rubbery skin
With my fingers.
The half–ripe banana
Slid from its skin
The slick roughness
Of the inner flesh
Cold to the touch.
I took a bite.
The tang of its greenness
Took away the overpowering
Banana flavor of ripe fruit.
The pulp was mushy
Against my teeth.
The banana flesh crushed
Easily between my molars.
I swallowed
The cool smoothness
Soothed my dry throat.
A few more bites-
Then back to the warmth of
My own bed.
Satisfied, I lay still
And contemplated
The freedom of being
In my own house
And getting up
To eat a banana
In the middle of the night.
