Blood and Water
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 08-02-2002

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Blood of the New Covenant is one;
Blood of the newborn is another.
Dripping through the thorns,
Flowing from the spear thrust,
The wrists, the ankles…
Stigmata ultimata…
Pouring from the lamb,
Gushing from the womb.

It flows Eternally, the blood,
Cleansing the sinner.
Bleed him with leeches and scalpels.
Menstrual blood, the curse, time of the month
The cycle - the blood-red moon.

Placental blood, umbilical blood,
The tie that binds flowing
Always through the infinite pipeline -
The veins, the arteries, arterioles, capillaries
Blood connects us, connects us all.

The internal sea, the bloodstream;
Outside, then in, floating in water then
Carrying the water within.
Primeval sea of nutrients, single-celled organisms
Evolved into complex creatures with circulatory systems –
Pumps, pipes, valves, controls…

Blood of the black-jacked and the bludgeoned,
Blood of the stabbed and the slashed –
Blood of the maimed in the streets, alleys and towers
In the gutters, on the pavements.
Streaming down the sidewalks, pooled in front of OJ’s -
Blood staining the Earth – blackening as it dries,
Oxidizing to copper dust.
Blood to dust…

Blood to blood, pathogenic blood –
Blood-born pathogens, semen to blood,
HIV-contaminated blood, Herpes simplex
Hepatitis C, metacecaria, liver flukes
Lyme’s Disease, sleeping sickness
Elephantiasis, malaria, leukemia…
Henoch-Schoenlin Puerpera!
Unclean blood, blood-letting
exsanguinated rivers criss-crossing
Merging, blending, synergizing - connecting us all
This is my blood. Drink this in remembrance…

Blood oathes, pin-pricked fingers touching;
Razor-slashed wrists joining.
Blood bonds, blood brothers and sisters,
Brotherhood of the Blood.
Sisterhood of the Blood.
Blood cults…

But blood’s thicker than water;
You are blood of my blood, my bloodline,
My flesh and blood.
Yo! my Blood, my Man, my Homey, my Nigga.
There’s bad blood between them…
Bloody yank, bloody mick, bloody kike,
Bloody wop, bloody bohunk, bloody spic
Bloody spook - bloody Hell!!!

Water of the seas is one;
Water of the tears, another.
Drowning us in floods, typhoons, tsunamis –
Cleansing the Earth of vermin,
Cleansing the soul of grief.
Two-by-two came the animals
Onto the Ark, Ark of the Covenant,
The New Covenant of Blood.
And it rained for 40 days and 40 nights
And the World was covered in water,
Except for the island whence came the dove
With the olive branch in its beak.

Thence came the Living Water,
The water of the spirit, Holy water –
Purifying, sanctifying, blessing, cleansing
Purging, slaying vampires and ousting poltergists
Exorcising demons!
Baptizing, baptismal founts, fountains of water;
Oceans, lakes, streams, rivers, arteries of the Earth
The Fountainhead of Life. The Source.
Water turned into wine.

Headwaters of the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Elbe,
The Volga, the Yang Tzi, the Thames
Drowned corpses floating, born on the Bayou,
Water, water everywhere and not a drop…
Waterfalls, water spouts, waterslides, water parks, water sports…

Mist, dew, rain, sleet, snow, frost, fog, ice…
“Hail, hail, the gangs all here! What the Hell do we…”
Sailboats, ocean liners, battleships, aircraft carriers,
Submarines. Venetian canals – “Oh solo mio!”
Volga River boatmen singing “Haul away boys!”
The red corpuscle said to the white:
“By the by, I bloody well know you!”
Pirates on the Seven Seas slashing with cutlasses:
“Avast me hearties! Sixteen men on a dead man’s chest.
Yo! Ho! Ho! and a bottle of rum.”
Blood-letting, blood on the water, the blood-red moon…
Blood of my blood, blood thicker than water…
“I will give you Living Water…”
Crimson tides…blood saddle-pommel high
On the Plains of Abraham…
