Time at times seems,
As Utah Phillips called it,
“An endless long river”
Flowing smoothly, endlessly
Into the past.
Still times there are
When time seems more
A leaky, dripping tap.
I can hear the drip of time
Against the nickel basin.
I can see time’s drip collect
Beneath the tap of now.
Silver bead begins to peak
Gleams and reaches down.
Edges crisp, it clings.
I can hear the drip of time
Against the nickel basin.
Time’s drip languid plumps
And pregnant loses hold.
Silver round perfection.
Ponderous drop
Having lost its grip
Plummets to the nickel.
“Tip, tep, tip, tep,”
It murmurs as it trickles.
In sinks across the world
Filth is rinsed away.
Grease and gick and foodstuffs
Are forever gone.
What’s gone is forgotten.
What if time were not like sinks
And drifted clean away?
If time were like a shower
Whose drain was fully clogged?
Events and deeds pool.
If time pooled round our ankles
Events and deeds dissolved,
Would we still act the way we do
As if all is resolved...
With time sweeping us away?
