Only hours old
But still I got to hold you....
Tiny boy,
What great joy
As my arms enfold you.

Jaundice, why?
Tiny guy,
Does it hurt you much?
Other's hands
Make demands
Try for a gentle touch.

Needles pain,
No weight gain
Wake up, Babe and eat;
Bruises show
It hurts to know
You've sore head, hands and feet.

They shaved your head
But couldn't get
The i.v. tube to flow;
We worried nights
And prayed you'd fight
We've learned to love you so....

Now, Baby dear,
You still are here
And growing more each day;
We are thrilled to know
That you will grow
More in our hearts each day.....

I had twin daughters in intensive care for three months after their birth (1981 - they were born twelve weeks premature). So I can connect with the situation as well as anyone. Nice emotional piece.

Hey you old boot! So, the kid finally arrived. He was supposed to be a girl!!!! (at least that's what I decided). He sure is handsome, unsure as yet who he looks like....sort of reminds me of your "little eskimo baby" though, with all that dark hair. Lovely poem. Cute kid, glad he and mikita are doing well. Congrats, again, grandmama (nana) and to bumpa as well. Love, Little sis

A great read, Betty. So full of passion and the kinds of sentiments that touch deep inside.

Ditto what the others said. Touching. Heartfelt. Thirteen years ago, when my brother was born, his billyruben (I can't spell worth a darn) was through the roof. Your poem brought it all back. I felt I was holding the tiny yellow guy.

Thank you both for your wonderfully touching comments!! Sharing feelings is so intensely gratifying, isn't it? My new grandson is over 10 hours away from me by bus, but I can still feel him snuggling on my shoulder.

I could hardly get through the poem with out crying,it is so touching. I was present when my granddaughter was born, she was born blue. Everyone had given up except this little fat nurse, that had pissed me off eariler. Well, she brought vanessa back to life and became my hero. Vanessa is 13 years old now. Touching write Betty.
