Silent Salty Dreams
by Maralee Gerke
copyright 08-15-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 17

We are born in a great gush
Of water and blood,
Fluids our mother provided us.
We float in the
Salty brine of the womb,
Gliding in the unknown
Darkened depths.
Crawling through soothing liquid life
Imagining reality in dreams of
Ancient seas.
Bathing silently until
The moment of emergence
Becoming creatures of
Air and earth
Crying out in fear and longing.
Never returning to our
Prenatal saline existence
Preserving only our
Silent, salty, dreams.

Now I can imagine what it was like before we were born. There is a striking imagery in your verses. They flow naturally.

You have some very vivid lines in this poem. So captures the part of life before reality and age gives us a different site.

I particularly like, "Preserving only our silent, salty, dreams." And it makes a very compelling title.
