_Humbly Puffed and Humbly Humble_

A puffed up ego, pride that tries to hide,
judging, belittling, patting one's own back.
That rotten baneful bubble
ferments beneath the surface
of an egotistical brew,
until one day it surfaces and burst
emitting its offensive stench,
hurting and offending others.

_Humbly Humble_

True humility, Is to be self-free,
Pride, the festering rot
that would destroy within my thought
the good I should see.

Turn the lens on me, I beg,
reveal where serpents hide,
step on its head,
rebuke my foolish pride.

For goodness sake,
take these thoughts from me,
that I might breathe the essence
of being truly self-free.
That I might feel your presence
In true humility.

This I will protect and hide my Lord,
even from myself,
lest I find pride in my new found
Humility.

Elena Subia

The idea for this write was sparked by a phrase in Ben Franklyn’s Poor Richards Almanac. About being proud of his humility.

I enjoy this quote too:
“It is our pride that makes another’s criticism rankle”
…Author unknown.

Whoops! I never was good at names. I should have read more closely. There is clearly no "s" in Elena. Sorry, I am so senile sometimes.

Hi Selena! A little pride can be a positive thing. Of course, when it becomes excessive, it transitions to vanity, which might be to one's detriment. I loved your poems and think that you should be proud of them. Because they are cleverly crafted and original and an expression of you. Thanks for reading my poem and your nice comments. Best Regards, Lyle

The two short poems side by side constitute a strong and perceptive case for humility above pride. I particularly admired the way in which you equated shallow humility with a form of pride in the final lines of the second poem.

A dash of pride can do wonders for your self-esteem, but more than that usually leads to a big downfall. Wonderful poems.

Very insightful, by looking outward to others and appreciating them we make our lives fuller and happier. Thank you for the lovely comment!

You said it so well....especially the part about turning the camera to one's self. If we all were more mindful of this....what a better place the world would be...may we all have a bit more humility. Excellent writing! Thank you also, for your comment on my poem! Welcome to PNP!

You did a great job of capturing the perils of pride. So true, so well written also.

Elena: What an accurate picture you painted about the puffed up ego. How true! I especially liked the second verse of Humbly Humble -- Turn the lens on me --. I think we all need to do that now and then.

Very good writing. I am looking forward to reading more of your works.
