Darkness
by Heidi K.
copyright 06-20-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Magic reigns in the dark of night
Fairies fly by without a sound
Elves creep under leaves long dead
as trolls amble through the wood
and the unicorn dances under the moon
and I in my chair by the fire, safe and warm.

The vampires are hunting for blood that's warm
when the day grows into the night
and witches fly across the moon
cackles drown out all other sound
a hush falls in the eerie wood
as the graves release the dead

I remember those long dead
whose love had kept me warm
my fire low I add more wood
to keep out the advancing night
The fire crackles, a soothing sound
and my gaze drifts toward the moon

I see by the light of the full moon
the armies of the walking dead
caught by fear, I utter no sound
and my haven is no longer warm
the fire has gone out, bringing in the night
then I hear the knock of hands upon the wood

they land again on my door of wood
and a cloud has covered the moon
my world now owned by the night
and I cry for the light, now dead
no longer feeling safe and warm
my stifled sobs the loudest sound

There! Again that awful scraping sound
as they tear at my shelter of wood
I pull my blanket tighter hoping to warm
as I pray for the light of the moon
to return and save me from the dead
by removing the cloak of night

But then night always lives in the wood
The sound never quenched by the moon
The dead always lurk there, seeking flesh so warm.

Author Note: Gosh this was hard. I am not sure I am happy with it or even like it. I am happy at having done it. Maybe with practice and writing more of these I will get better at it. This was definitely a challenge!
