Madness

Amazing how the mind itself defends -
a mechanism not devoid of grief.
Assaulted by the pain that hate portends,
insanity is sometimes just relief.
Instead of feeling all life’s tragic stings,
the mind retreats to where it can’t be hurt -
to realms surreal and full of peaceful things -
secure as in the womb before its birth.
Withdrawn to this tenacious sanctuary,
mind rarely peeks to see if life is safe.
Strong drugs and therapy and yet, mind’s wary;
averse to leave the solace of this place.
Doctors stymied - there’s no good prognosis;
Madness is the only diagnosis.

Gosh, Lyle, here we've never met, yet I would have thought you had after reading this poem. But judging from Billy's comments, I guess more than one person is going to read this and say, "Hey, how did you know me so well!" Great poem, er, I guess I should say, "It really visits where so many of us live!"
Well done, Lyle. I am especially fond of the line, "insanity is sometimes just relief." In times of greatest trouble, we all feel our grasp on reality come a little undone.
I'm not talking about you Billy. Not in particular, at least. I was actaully talikng about myself, since I am truly mad. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
