Vicky woke up excited. Scrambling out of bed, she threw her clothes on. Today was the day that the new horse was to arrive and she didn't want to be late.
Hurrying down the stairs, Vicky clattered into the kitchen. "Vicky!" her mother exclaimed, "How many times have I told you to be quieter in the morning." "Sorry mom," Vicky said, "but the new horse is arriving today." Vicky's mom glanced at the clock. "Your father said not until after 9am this morning. Why don't you sit down and have breakfast first okay hun." With a sigh, Vicky obeyed and took a chair. Shortly thereafter, having finished breakfast, Vicky took her dishes and put them in the sink.
Yelling at her mom, "I'm headed out to the barn," VIcky flew out the door with excitement. Vicky's collie Misty scampered up to greet her. Vicky stopped to pat her, "Come on gal, let's go see Dad". Vicky ran to the barn with Misty following along behind, wagging her tail.
"Hey dad," VIcky asked, "Do you need any help?" Turning, Vicky's dad said "No but you could bring some more straw down for the new horse's stall in case we need it." Vicky replied "Sure dad, no problem." Vicky hauled down two bales of straw out of the loft and put them in an empty stall next to the one for the new arrival. Coming out of the stall she spied the horse trailor outside. Vicky told Misty to stay in an empty stall and flew outside to see the new horse.
There stood the loveliest horse she had ever seen! Standing tall, totally jet black, looking grand, was the new arrival. "Vicky come meet him," her dad said holding onto the halter. Vicky walked out and patted the horse on the neck admiring him. "What shall we call him dad, or does he have a name," Vicky asked. "Why don't you pick out a new name for him since this is a new start," her dad replied. Vicky stood for a moment, "Let's call him Ravenswing" she said.
After Ravenswing had been at the farm for three months (her father having decided to rest him up before training), Vicky noticed that he seemed different then the other horses on the farm. He was a much smarter, more intelligent then the rest, for Vicky noticed that he always seemed to know when the weather was going to change and out stay inside if it rained. Vicky's dad never could catch him, Ravenswing always took shelter in the field shed.
That night over supper Vicky's dad remarked that the new horse may have to go. "How come dad?" Vicky asked. Her father replied, "I can't catch him to train him and that was the reason I bought him so we could race him then breed him on our farm." Going on, "I'm having Les and his crew come tomorrow and round him up."
Vicky slipped out of the house after supper while her mom and dad were quietly talking over coffee. Misty came up to Vicky. "Oh Misty," Vicky cried, "Ravenswing is such a lovely horse and now he has to leave!"
Vicky ran off to the pasture where she stopped dead in her tracks. For there was Ravenswing, with wings unfurled, glowing in the moonlight. For you see, Ravenswing had been injured and couldn't fly, thus he was confined to earth. As Vicky stood here watching, Ravenswing with a mightly leap, sprung into the air, soaring out of sight. "Wow!" Vicky thought, "Pegasus."
"Vicky" her mother yelled from the house. "time for bed young lady." "Okay mom, I'm coming" she replied. Next morning Vicky ran down the stairs and entered the kitchen. There stood her mom and dad looking worried. "What's wrong?" she asked her dad. "Ravenswing is gone" Vicky's dad said. "Did you see him last night at all?" her dad asked. "Sure dad, I went out before bed and saw him in the pasture," she replied.
"Well I guess I'll have to call the police up and report a missing horse. Plus too, put an ad in the paper asking if anyone finds a black horse to call" her dad said. Vicky smiled quietly to herself remembering how she saw Ravenswing fly away. VIcky knew if she told her mom and dad that, they would think she was nuts and not believe her. As the years went by, her parents remained mystified by the mystery of the missing horse. But Vicky knows that Pegasus, the flying horse does exist.
