Selena
by Sharron Loughran
copyright 06-25-2001

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Selena ran out of the teacher's room in tears after the unfavorable review he had given her. It would never do for her classmates to laugh at her shortcomings so she bypassed the main halls and ran down the back one to reach her room.

Throwing open the door, she picked up her guitar and quickly packed her belongs. Looking around carefully, no one in sight, she exited the building and decided to go look for somewhere else to stay having decided she no longer belonged at the music center.

Wandering the streets lost in thought, she didn't realize how late it was until the sun had set and most places were closed for the night. Sighing, she headed down to the park, surely there was a place there she could nap in. Spying a likely bench under a tree, she settled down on it.

Opening up her pack, she strung her guitar and started softly playing. Then with a flash of light, an elf appeared. "How nice a mortal to amuse us," he said. Then all of a sudden, Selena couldn't move, let alone speak. In the earth, a hidden door appeared, then Selena and the elf were gone.

When Selena opened up her eyes, she was surrounded by elves. The High King Telandriale baded her to play for them. She nodded and bent her head down, coming up with the first tune in her head. Slowly she played fainly but the music grew louder the more she played. Soon she had exhausted the tunes she knew, but then she remembered the old tunes her granny from Ireland had taught her. Her granny was a great believer in the little ones and elves etc and had taught her all the knowlege passed on to her by her mother.

Selena grinned for now she knew what to do. She started in on the old gypsy tunes, playing faster and louder until the elves could take no more, pleading with her to stop. Serena made one condition, she was to be freed. "Done" wept the High King, "Now go mortal, never return." Selena stopped to grab her guitar and fled down the shaft to the door to her world.

Exiting, she sighed with relief, grabbed up her bag and decideded maybe the park wasn't a good place any more to stary and hunted for a new place. Before leaving, she spotted the very signs that her grandmum had warned her about. She pledged next time to pay more attention to her surroundings before tangling with elves again.

Sharron, I enjoyed this very much, being Irish myself, I can remember some fun stories that have been handed down in our family. Your writing is concise and colorful. Great job!...Connie:)
