Goodbye
by Tiff Nenstow (Age: 19)
copyright 09-01-2002

Age Rating: 10 to 127

All of us seemed to see eye to eye,
But now we may have to kiss those times goodbye.
Always thought graduation’d be a happy day,
But how can I be happy with friends already drifting away?

I try to think of it as moving on,
Meeting new friends and having fun.
I have a group of sister-like friends;
Different interests could bring friendship to an end.
I’m afraid my clique is about to be broken up.
Friends from different groups make our best buds stuck up.

All of us seemed to see eye to eye,
But now I have to kiss those times goodbye.
Always thought graduation’d be a happy day,
But how can I be happy with friends already drifting away?

We’ll graduate for a second time, and some will go on to another school.
Others will shrug off college but look back and see that they were the fools.
Those who keep going might become cops, lawyers, or doctors.
Bullies will watch in amazement as geeks become rockers.
Sometimes my imagination gets carried away.
Sometimes I start thinking ‘bout a time far from today.

All of us seemed to see eye to eye,
But now I have to kiss those times goodbye.
Always thought graduation’d be a happy day,
But how can I be happy with friends already drifting away?

Thinkin’ about it, time really flies.
Someday we’ll have to kiss old times good bye.
Always thought graduation would be a happy day,
But how can I be happy when all my friends are drifting away?

Tiff,

This is a very good poem. You've captured the ambivalence that opften comes with big achievements and changes in our lives. Every hurdle brings pride and opportunity, but it can hurt to leave behind the stages that came before. Good work, and welcome. Keep it up.

P.S. This section of the site is new, so people may be slow to see and comment on your work, but hang in there. Keep writing and posting, and you'll be noticed.
