A Tale of the Tale Gazette - Rain caused trouble...
by Bianca Boonstra
copyright 09-15-2002

Age Rating: 4 to 127

It is raining in The Tale Forest.
It doesn’t rain hard, but it is raining constantly for a few days already.
All the animals in The Tale Forest are hiding in their houses.
There they stay dry…

At least, most of the animals stay dry…

Ed and William Beaver are working in their garage. They made a few improvements to the Tale Forest Fire Truck, when the phone started to ring. Ed walks to the phone and takes the call…

Ed Beaver: “Good Morning. You are speaking with Ed Beaver. Is there anything I can do for you?”
Miss Starch: “Ah, Good Morning Ed. I am glad I caught one of you home this morning. I hope you have time to help me…my home is starting to get wet… And I don’t know what to do!”
Ed Beaver: “Don’t worry, Miss Starch, we’re on our way.”
With those words, he hung up.

William already had gathered his tools together. He also started the van and was waiting for his brother. Ed was pleasantly surprised and got in the car. Within a few minutes they arrived at Miss Starch’ house. She was already standing in the door, waiting for them.

Miss Starch: “Ahh, my friends. I am so glad that you could come so quick…Come in.”

Ed and William entered the house and saw a few pots and pans standing on the floor in Miss Starch’ living room.
William looked up, so did Ed. They saw a stripe of the grey sky, through the two holes in the ceiling.

Ed Beaver: “We already see what the problem is. We’re going to fix it.”
He went outside and his brother followed him. They took a big ladder out of the back of their van and put it in position. Ed climbed on the ladder and found himself a spot on the roof, where he could stand. William took some tools up with him and handed them to Ed. William had to go down again, to take the rest out of the car and climbed up to assist Ed. The two Beavers worked silently together, knowing each other so well, that they understood each other without speaking a word.

Two hours later, both holes were fixed. Ed and William climbed down, gathered their tools again and went back home.

They stopped the van in front of the garage door. There stood Uncle Hank, the Dove. He was in a bad mood.

Uncle Hank: “Good Morning, or should I better say: Good Afternoon…”
William Beaver: “Well…it is just after twelve, so it is afternoon…”
Uncle Hank:”I am standing here for more than an hour already. You don’t pick up the phone. And when I came here I saw the garage closed. Where have you been?”
Ed Beaver: “We have been fixing the roof of Miss Starch her house. They weren’t easy to fix, it took some time.”
Uncle Hank: “Ahh, I see. I understand.” A smile appeared on his face.
William Beaver: “I think you are not here for a courtesy visit Uncle Hank. Is there something we can do for you?”
Uncle Hank: “I had to close the post office this morning. There is a large hole in the ceiling. If it goes on raining like this, the whole floor is getting wet. Can you fix it?”
Ed Beaver: “Sure we can. Hop in the van, it saves you a walk back to the post office…”

Uncle Hank did what he was asked and together they drove to the post office. They arrived after a few minutes and Uncle Hank opened the door, while Ed and William got their tools.

Uncle Hank: “It is a mess. “
William Beaver: “We can fix it, my friend. Don’t worry. Why don’t you call Miss Ant in the mean time, she would love to help you clean the post office up and make the floor as proper as can be…”
Uncle Hank: “Excellent idea!”

Ed and William started to work on the roof and Uncle Hank called Miss Ant. She was so happy that she could help. She came as fast as her feet could carry her.

Half an hour later Ed and William heard Miss Ant sing a song. Uncle Hank had left for a service round, delivering the post to the animals this time. They were happy to see him.

The hole in the roof was fixed by the end of the day. Ed and William climbed down the stairs and saw Uncle Hank waiting for them.

Uncle Hank: “I am so happy that you fixed my roof this afternoon. But I also saw that it is dinner time already. I would be honored if you two would join me for dinner. Miss Ant is staying as well.
The Beaver brothers accepted with a smile.
That was a nice end of a day with hard work, while the rain caused trouble…

Mister Owl: “And now, get to sleep in your nice warm beds. And remember: Close your eyes, and your little mouths. Goodnight!”

Don't worry, I'll fix that!
I don't like the :'s.
Uncle Hank: “I am so happy that you fixed my roof this afternoon. But I also saw that it is dinner time already. I would be honored if you two would join me for dinner. Miss Ant is staying as well."
You could say :
“I am so happy that you fixed my roof this afternoon. But I also saw that it is dinner time already. I would be honored if you two would join me for dinner. Miss Ant is staying as well, "
Uncle said.
That makes better sense, unless you intended for this to be a dialogue.
