A fishtrap, handmade of dogwood and willow
Twined with cordage strong and supple
Set with rocks at the mouth of
A small upriver stream.
Held enough salmon for a family.
Guts carefully returned to the
Clear shallow water.
Food for the fry swimming atop
Shriveling egg sacs.
Flesh pierced and dried on
Sticks in the summer sun.
Stored for winter in plaited baskets.
Reverence for the importance of
Being salmon.
Dams built over roiling rapids
Of the great western rivers
Block the homeward path
Of humpbacked hormone driven
Long jawed males and females
Collected by millions
Year on year
Feeding no one but greed.
Water churned to silt
Chokes the entering streams
With electrically charged death.
Destroying the importance of
Being salmon.

Well thie is very refressing I ust to live on the water. I miss it,but I won't make the mistake of jumping to a conclution of it refering to your life. After all 4 e-mails pertaining to the same subject suggest more than a little upset. Forgive me I'm new out here. This is a nice poem. An the other I jumped to a conclution was Quik thinking an I'm glad you were inspired by the circumstances that you were. DIXIE LEE
