Quietly stepping
Regal head held high,
from out of the forest
where they night time lie.
The buck steps first
balancing his heavy head,
behind comes the doe
being carefully led.
Close by her side
with large brown eyes,
fawns nudge her for love
she gently sighs.
Such beauty I see
stride across the field,
I hold my breath closely
as slowly they yield,
to the motors and pedals
and all unseen danger.
They hide behind trees
if perhaps there’s stranger.
They leave the cold stream
slip back into shadow,
so quiet and still
the now empty meadow.
