Warrior Dance
by Ron Hawkins
copyright 10-08-2002

Age Rating: 13 to 127

Heartbeat thrumming, setting the rhythm
Feet moving as the warm blood flows
Matching the heartbeat, honor beat
Searching the plains, searching the land
Shield up, protect the heart as it beats
Keep the blood from flowing out
Look around, find the enemy, protect the heart
Out away from home, the heart draws the circle
Look, warrior, look, search them out
Take a stand as the heart beats faster, adrenalin surging
I will stand, they shall not pass, We will stand, Together

Search again, look around, follow the tracks, the heart beats
The voices all about and inside, singing the songs
Guiding the feet, drawing the heart to the beat
Drawing brother to brother, father to son, grandfather
Ancestors, brothers and sisters, near and far,
Blood of my blood, some has flowed, some still does
The heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat, heartbeat
Ceremony, sage smoke, Eagle passes by in salutation
The eye searches, as Sun shines warmly on the field
Ceremony, Ceremony, Ceremony, honor beat

Heartbeat hammers, up and stand tall, again and again
Piercing voices, singers and warriors, voicing their strength
No fear, only strength, shields and spears, fans and rattles
Blankets and sashes, bandoliers of one’s life
Gather, my brothers, and feel the earth
Gather, my sisters, touch the sky
Gather, and welcome, here and beyond
Dance in the sun, never stop moving
As the heart beats and voices rise in song

He feels the beads of sweat as they trickle down his cheek
He smiles as he feels his ancestors, his secret friends
Surrounded by those unseen and brothers of the earth
Supported by the women, Keepers of the hearth and home
Honor, tradition, children, so many gather
He looks at the sky and dreams
Old days, old traditions, old ways, new life
He is a warrior, he has been in harm’s way
His tribe will survive, his people will live
Through him and his children, his traditions will breathe
The blood will tell, the heartbeat lives

Smiling at his companions, smiling at the feeling
Smiling at the joy of being alive and with the heartbeat
He feels them, looks all around, looks to the rocks
Rocks on the mountain, so many, so white in the light
Then something else is on the rock, is it a figure?
One steps forth upon the rock on the ridge, he speaks
Follow the path, warrior, follow the path
Another appears over there, that ridge, that rock
He smiles down, he laughs, hands on hips, hair blowing
Wind brings waves of another, and she smiles and nods at him
Dance, brother, dance, blessing and prayers bring you to us
Blessing and prayers we give to you, dance, dance, dance

Closer to the heartbeat he moves, closing the circle
Wind cool on his brow, Sun warm on his clothes
Yes, he looks again after looking within, they are still there
Looking down at him, lifting him up, Spirit soars
He is on the ridge with them as they all dance
Feel the heartbeat in the earth, in the air, in the blood
Flow with it, move to it, dance, dance, dance
Feel your brothers, feel your sisters, Faster
Feel them all, around you, surrounding you, part of you

Heartbeat getting louder, pounding pounding
Beating through the flesh, beating through the blood
Beating through the heart, Reaching the Spirit as it soars
Riding the whirlwind of joy and strength
Rattles shake, Coyote howls! the warrior can rest

Rest now, my brother, rest well
Rest now, my sister, he will need you again soon
Soon the heartbeat will call you back
Back to the search, back to the stand
Back to the dance, the blood will flow
Dance, dance, dance.
