The artist has his palette, brush and paints, with which he can create the world as he sees it. He can express a mood, a feeling, with a color or a hue. He can express rage or passion with the intensity of color, or the bold stroke of his brush.
This uncommon gift allows a rare few to influence the thoughts and emotions of so many.
So too, the writer has the word. Doesn't seem like much in comparison. Everyone uses the word to communicate, with various degrees of skill. The word is used to desecrate the sacred, and decorate the lonely walls of public rest rooms. It’s misused so often to merchandise things of questionable value, that it's no wonder you may question my association of the word with the work of the creative artist.
The word to the writer is another creative, colorful, media for expressing thoughts and emotions. His metaphor is like the melody to a song. The words selectively chosen, and methodically placed on a page, are like the carefully chosen paints, applied meticulously with the artist's brush upon the canvas.
The politician uses the word to motivate and manipulate the masses.
The despot's greatest fear is the word, for which there is no defensive weapon.
The philosopher uses the word in exchange for the right to influence the thoughts and life style of so many.
The analyst measures the word so as to apply it in a manner that will organize the thought process for orderly use.
And then there's the romantic who offers the word symbolically to stir and arouse the emotions of that special person in their life. While at the same time to relieve the building pressures created by amorous adventure.
So remember that no matter who you are and what course life has chosen for you to pursue, you still have the opportunity to capture the world with a word.
