The drive into work seemed to last hours as Shelby sorted through the images of the dreams she had last night. There is something amazing about dreams,
she thought, when the answers, not readily available in the waking, pop up freely during times of slumber.
There was a definite disadvantage to doing your thinking in your sleep, when you awoke you never felt rested and you would wonder if it was really worthwhile to go to bed at all. Shelby, however, was glad that she had managed to get a few hours of sleep to contemplate the issues that would arise from the
imminent destruction of the sun.
The initial phase would be the most shocking to the human body; there would be no relief from the heat produced when the sun went into a super-nova
stage. The images from her dreams started to make sense as she realised that each image represented species that were unable to adapt to extreme changes in climate and topography.
With the recent advancements in technology and science, there should be a way for the inhabitants of the earth to shelter themselves from the coming
increases in temperature. Perhaps each head of state and federal government structure around the world could bring down a directive that individuals would be restricted from going outside for the initial 48-hour period surrounding the demise of the sun. Surely for something this important you would think that a common goal would lead toward a unified effort, but Shelby was
painfully aware of each nation having the desire to prove its' independence. She just hoped that they would listen to scientific fact and common sense.
Barring the ability to keep individuals from direct exposure to the sun as it entered its final stage of destruction, Shelby would have to be able to come up with a second initiative in order to (if she was to try to) help as many people survive as possible.
It was already 45 minutes since Shelby left her home and from the speed of traffic she judged she would not get to work for another hour and a half. How in the world did we get so many cars on the road when over half of the city's population don't even work from home, she questioned the empty passenger seat.
Oh well, Shelby would be able to continue on her current brain wave and hopefully she would come up with some solutions that could be mathematically
and scientifically supported so that she could take them to the advisory board.
Sadly, even the advisory board did not see a reason to fear that the sun would become extinguished and so did not understand why they had to waste so much money, time and resources on a futile project. Perhaps she would need to present the data in a historical time line for the board members to see the recurring pattern that the earth faced and continues to face. She sighed heavily and tried to piece together a presentation for the board.
Sometimes she wondered how the advisory board came to be chosen. Each member received a healthy stipend for serving on the committee, but there was no real screening process to ensure that all areas of the community were included.
The perfect board would have consisted of Ecologists, Astronomers, Meteorological specialists, Medical Doctors, Physiologists, Mathematicians, in addition to members of the general public. Each person would be able to help evaluate the affects of this event on different aspects of life. The joining of these minds would help to create a solution that took into account not only the affect on the earth, but also on the health of its people.
Instead most of the members were senior management that had outlived their productive years and were seconded to the project so that they would be able
to maintain their positions until retirement.
It was really no wonder that it was difficult to sell changes to the members, they were brought up in another generation where the concept of man walking on the moon was still completely amazing and when there were no thoughts or plans for further space exploration or advancements in tools of Astronomy. If they couldn't touch it, feel it, sense it or smell it then they had no foundation for understanding this kind of issue.
Her drive through the congested streets took longer than she would have liked. It was difficult to keep track of the multiple thoughts that were racing through her mind. She was sure that she could keep the information about the species that became extinct; it would be the solutions that would cause the problem. Sometimes ideas were fleeting and if one didn't have a chance to write those ideas down the solutions often became lost for good.
Another twenty minutes until she reached the office, she would try to remember the solutions that she came up with in the final minutes of the drive to work. It would be necessary for her to be able to scientifically support any potential solutions. This day promised to be a long but exciting experience.
