Give me the majestic yet simple rivers
of my homeland, southern Georgia
Weaving and rolling across the terrain
Slowly slipping toward the sea
Like slow strands of molasses
rolling across the farmland
They almost seem to call out
'There's no reason to rush, my lad
No need to hurry
Just slow down and look around
Take time to smell the magnolias
Sense the aroma of sweet magnolias
And weeping willows hanging low
Lest they fall down any lower
To halt the rivers flow
Preview the architecture of century old
Riverbank darkened cedar roots
Among the abundance of kudzu
In its close pursuit
Admire the budding azaleas
And brightly blooming dogwoods
Sense just once their fragrance
And pause to consider
Simply a slow deep breath
of sweet southern air
A moment of relaxation
And food for the soul
Then home to an ole'rockin' chair
There's no reason to rush, my lad
no need to hurry
just slow down
and just for once
take time
to smell the roses.
Collaboration and arrangement by Janet Burl. Many thanks
for your talent and dedication.
