Your Loosing It
by Esther Spurrill (Age: 29)
copyright 03-16-2003

Age Rating: 7 to 127

WARNING: Rant Follows

Why is it so hard for so many people to spell certain words correctly? What is it about these words that makes them so difficult? Why can I spell them? Why does it bother me so much when others misspell them?

The words I speak of are "you're" and "losing," commonly spelled "your" and "loosing." Why? This is a grave error, as "your" and "loosing" are words but mean something completely different from what the writer is trying to say.

"You're" is the contraction form of "you are." "Your" is the possesive form of "you." "Losing" is the present tense of the verb "to lose," which means the opposite of "to find"; while "loosing" is the present tense of the verb "to loose," which means the opposite of "to bind."

I have often seen these two misspellings in emails, hand-written letters, and other such informal venues. If those were the only places I found them, I would understand. But I have found these misspellings in professionally published and printed material!

Perhaps my one-woman crusade against the misspelling of these two words is foolish. Perhaps I am being nitpicky and spending too much energy on stuff that doesn't really matter. Am I?

Uh, I always make the same mistakes!
Thanks for letting me know how to spell it correctly I couldn't have been a gramatically correct author if it wasn't for you!

Can you own a 'losing it"? If not, then it can't be YOUR losing it, can it?
