She never knew what love was
Walking in the pathways between darkness and light
She carried with her a torch
Useless without batteries
Broken bulb trapped inside
Still she held it close to her heart
Because it was all she had left
After the rains came
And flooded her world
Carrying away everything precious to her

She wandered in the pathways between darkness and light
Never really understanding why
Never really understanding how
She came to be there
Holding the torch with its useless bulb
And empty battery chamber
Trying to make sense of the shadows that rose up
Only to dissolve in manic chilling laughter

She wandered in the pathways between darkness and light
Reality was illusion; illusion was reality
They said she was crazy for walking through mirrors
Yet she came out the other side untouched
Except for the backward effect it had upon her soul
And the confusion it planted in her mind

She wandered in the pathways between darkness and light
Until caring souls came through the crevices to save her
They took away her torch with its useless bulb
And replaced the batteries
Giving it back to her without instructions
Assuming she knew the way now that she had the light

She wandered in the pathways between darkness and light
Clutching her torch tightly in her hand
Never knowing how to turn it on
And when she did
Went insane with the flood of brightness that poured out
Covering the monsters that were hidden in the darkness
As she crowed in the corner, her hands over her head
She lapsed into song
Nonsensical rhymes

She wandered in the pathways between darkness and light
Clutching her torch tightly
Shining its brilliance throughout the darkness
Crying in gibberish at the strangeness
Wondering how she came to be
In the pathways
Between darkness and light

Sad look into what happens to people when balance slips from their grip. Treatment being their only salvation. Professional people being the big answer for these folks, along with good food and soft healing hands. Sad is captured here. Very moving story on an old subject.
