Among Them You Stand Alone

In the blowing springtime breeze,
lovers stroll through budding trees.
Holding, embracing, you are none of these.
Among them you stand alone.
Summer brings the scorching sun.
People your age, out having fun.
Yet you toil, the day is not done.
Among them you stand alone.
Autumn approaches, families prepare,
for Thanksgiving dinner, you won't be there.
It's career before family, hardly seems fair.
Among them you stand alone.
With winter comes snowfall and Santa in sleigh.
Your Christmas cut short, you're going away.
You're off to the desert for a three month stay.
Among them you stand alone.
Day and night, all week, all year.
You defend our country, you show no fear.
Not even a "thank you" is what you’ll hear,
for among them you stand alone.

This is such a sad poem, and yet filled with so much truth. My cousin, Matthew, belongs to the army now and is going through basic training. It's amazing to think how much he is giving up just to defend his country. I admire him and the others, and this poem rings so true, for I have heard complaints of such from friends in the army. Beautiful, Catherine, and welcome to PnP
