Holiday for the Reaper
by M.E. (Bunny) Eastveld (Age: 54)
copyright 12-01-2002

Age Rating: 18 to 127

If the grim reaper took the day off,
I wonder how many people
would take note of the sudden
drop in the death rate?

How many would realize that they've extra time
for hugs and good-byes....
No recriminations, just peacemaking...
before He returns to his work?

How many would make amends
to those they've wronged -
to live or die with no regrets
and no anger....
or guilt prolonged.

How many would touch a friend?
Welcome the prodigal back to the fold?
How many might say "I love you",
And make peace..
instead of being cold?

At the end, we ALL are alone -
surrounded by the ones we love,
We still take that final journey solo,
from home...
to where?

And those who choose not to make amends?
If they knew they had just one more day....
twenty-four precious hours to "make-up"
and say the things needed saying before they go,
Would they?

I wonder if things left unspoken,
unforgiven and undone
are only felt by the grieving ones?
Or are they also felt by the one
who must atone?

Thanks David, and Patrick, and everyone else who commented on this one......not being a full member stinks! Most of my stuff I just write from the heart, and hate editing...it somehow loses something....although, Patrick, I did follow your advice, for the last stanza....thanks again! Bunny
