I know you, I’m certain, though I’m sure that we’ve never met; you’re that face midst the smoke and fire and the fumes, the one that I’ll never forget.
You’re the husband who kisses his wife with a smile, and promises his kids he’ll come home in a while.
You’re the one who waves back to my children, from your truck on the 4th of July; you’re the guy who comes to pluck, my cat from the tree, though I’ll never know just why.
You’ll kid the rookie, and then look after him, why you do it’s not easy to see—when questioned, you answer with a simple shrug and say, “Because the same was done for me.”
You’re the “citizen-soldier,” who rolls out at night to a beep or a whaling alarm; and you leave the comfort of family and home, to place yourself in harm; you’re the neighbor who comes not to watch or to stare, but to risk your life for mine, did I ever say “Thank you,” well in case I forgot, then now’s an appropriate time.
The word on the street says that they’re in there somewhere, amidst the blazing debris; just vagrants or homeless, nonetheless, I’ve learned you’d do the same for me.
Piece by piece you sift through the rubble, in search of the brothers you’ve lost; and you vow to bring them home to rest—no matter the personal cost.
You’re the face that I see, black band on your badge, and it’s clear you’ve traveled a way; but your brother has fallen, and your duty is clear, to honor him on this dark day.
Your simple advice, “Love your wife, love your life…” are words that we all should heed; not a “shaker” or a “mover,” just an ordinary man—you’re a true “All American” breed.
You’re the one I took for granted, until that fateful day, when our world was changed and country’s innocence, was forever taken away.
And you’re the one, who without question or pause, heeded the dutiful call—from those of us who beckoned you, from the buildings that once stood tall…
I can see you now, I am here midst the smoke; I’m the one that you came to find; so come sit by my side and rest with me now, here in this place divine;
Now I say to your friends and your family, lay sleepless and wonder no more, for your spirit and soul is alive and well, here amongst friends, above the 110th floor.
