slavery song
by Candice Liao (Age: 22)
copyright 01-11-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Here boy
Tell me who you are
You’re broken
And your eyes are dark like the bruises on the thigh

Don’t know your birthday?
It could be the same as baby Jesus
Don’t know your father?
He could be your master that you’ve never met
And your mother?
Ah, she’s the pair of arms that cradle you at night

Nestling in her chest
The hay no longer irritate your skin
The rocks no longer hurt your body
And her face?
As dark as yours
Glowing under the candle light

Here boy
Sing me the song again
Drown me with the sweet melody
From your golden throat
A string of pearl

Tell me the memories that throbs your heart:
When would the whipping stop?
You cringed
As the blood trickled down her ankle

A pool of red formed on the ground
Her bare back
Shone with sweat
And the whip
Exposed her flesh

The over-seer was excited by the sight
Underneath her dark skin
Her flesh was the same color as his

The whites fed on
The cries and pains
The sight of naked babies shriveling up in the cold
Purified their souls
Humanized them under God’s eyes

You want to sing
Your emotions so strong
When you open your mouth
This is what I hear:

Jacob’s ladder
We shall climb
Soldiers of the cross
We shall be
Hopes as real as the chains cuffed on our hands
We shall have.

Ah, the sweet melody
From your golden throat
A string of pearl

Wow! Being a 30 year old African-American female, I am impressed. You have a powerful voice to only be 16. I love the content, and vigor you demonstrate while delving into the nitty-gritty. Please continue to tap into this stream of consciousness. You have a bright future ahead of you.

thank you billy.
because this is only an assignment in my english class, i didn't concern myself with the authencity of the voice,(also because i've never done it before and didn't know how) but i'll try to work on it with your suggestions ( that is if i can finish my homeworks, first, ha).
