Sailor Moon Column
Tuxedo Mask and Zorro

I'm not quite sure why the creators of Sailor Moon based him on a Spanish hero, but anyone who has heard of Zorro can see the obvious similarities.

The most noticeable similarity between the two is the fact that they both wear black clothing with a swirling black cape. However, while Zorro most often is depicted wearing only black, Tuxedo Mask wears a white mask and the lining of his cape is red. Sometimes Zorro's cape is lined with red as well, and sometimes he wears a white shirt. Both heroes wear black hats as well, although Zorro's hat is flat and broad-brimmed (kind of like a Canadian Mountie's hat), while Tuxedo Mask wears an old-fashioned English top hat. Furthermore, Zorro is Spanish, and when Tuxedo Mask appears, the sound of Spanish castanets accompanies him.

There are differences between the two, of course. Zorro's weapon of choice is a fencing sword, while he also sometimes uses a whip. On the other hand, Tuxedo Mask most often fights by throwing roses at his opponent; he also often uses his English walking stick (which matches his hat) for hand-to-hand combat, and he sometimes hits his opponent with his hat.

These heroes secret identities also have interesting things in common. Mamoru/Darien is shy and reserved while his alter ego Tuxedo Mask is flamboyant and talkative. Diego de la Vega is a pacifist and almost a wimp while his alter ego Zorro is a strong, undefeated fighter.

Zorro and Tuxedo Mask both fight for justice. While they live in different times on opposite sides of the globe (Zorro in California under the rule of Spain, Tuxedo Mask in Japan in the 20th Century), they have much in common and Tuxedo Mask was surely patterned upon the Spanish hero.

You always find ways how sailor moon connects with other movies and shows.
