What Lies Within

  What Lies Within

A perfect match my father tells me, I'm to be betrothed tomorrow
My mysterious bride a foreign princess, from the Eastern land called Cannizaro

Sirius, her father, rules his people with a mighty hand
A rare and delicate flower is her mother, Shell Pink Orchid, Shy LaVanda

I swiftly leave the castle gates, riding forth without a word of notice
Journey northwards through the raven-woods, seek the council of Capricious

She rolls her Romany alphabet, throws all caution to the winds of fate
" Even though you're bound by law, sweet deception proves a counterweight "

Befuddled wonderings etched within my mournful soul, I scarce can catch my breath
The fortune-teller's gypsy runes, black magic scares me half to death

She's played me for a jolly fool, a jestering apprentice
Love's not considered in the plan, don't I deserve some happiness

Glassy-eyed and bored to tears, I watch the Callais Festive crowd
Paste a frozen smile upon my lips, sit immobile in my private shroud

Masked, the royal courtier lithely swishes a veleta across the ballroom floor
Appliqued tea-roses and carnations, accented millefleurs couture

Her sunshine smile is influential, dusky radiance in full bloom
A dance in graceful animation, silky crepe de Chine consumes

The winter blues within my heart, I'm close beside her in a minute
Just in time to hold her hand, she curtsies and I bow to a mingling minuet

I fall fast into her velvet eyes, trusting-brown, gentle fawning doe
No caustic case of star-crossed lovers, we're meant to be, ab initio

We stand in rash defiance, before the kingdom's holy priest
He smiles in wry amusement, then marries us, his Godly powers are unleashed

Unbeknownst to us, our parents guard the chapel's sacred shadows
But step forward as bold witnesses to our humble wedding, secret scenario

" I now pronounce you man and wife, our country's future King and Queen "
True words only if the royal courtier is the Princess Celimene

" Yes, " she sweetly whispers in my ear, " I'm Princess Celimene from Cannizaro,
But I had no idea you were Prince Rupert, or your father, King Alphonso

A pauper or a prince to love, with you I'd take my chances
I would have married you, no matter what the odds-on circumstances "

" Your steadfast love is diamond-cut, richly shines for all the world to see
A sparkling jewel of lighted wealth, it knows no boundaries "

Celimene, I risked all I had on earth, pledged heart and soul to you
Loving who you are inside, royal courtier or princess true "

The moral of the story is to see behind the person's outer skin
Delve deep into the heart and soul, and find what lies within
