Why A Nurse??
by M.E. (Bunny) Eastveld (Age: 54)
copyright 01-03-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

Now's the time to get some things straight
These burning issues cannot wait,
I am a nurse, and damn good at my craft,
and I no longer am willing to get the shaft
from the docs.

Issue one, as I see it, is a simple one to beat,
It concerns the 'Doctor's Order Sheet'.
Now once and for all, I say it's for the best
that I no longer 'take orders'.
But I am open to "requests".

And, another thing that bothers me,
is the fact that "the suits" just cannot see
that the "customer is (NOT) always right!"
When the "customer" comes in for help,
for deliverance from his plight,
The nurse can't hope but feel that she and the docs are "always right".

That's issue two, my friends, you see, and
It's not all the same to me to call them "clients" or to call them "guests",
and they're not here at my behest,
They've come because they're ill, or hurt.

Issue three, it seems to me concerns extent of injury.
Those who complain and whine the most,
are usually those whose problem is their personality,
rather than a physical abnormality.
To get it straight, they're patients, all....
and to me, the whiners seem very small
and very NOT patient, after all.

The gravely ill is why I'm here,
not for some guy drinking beer, who cut his hand on the can,
and should have stayed home with a band
-aid.

But it's the gravely ill who make no whine,
They patiently await the time
it takes to see a doctor.
Gratitude is in their eyes,
and because of them I know the wherefores and whys,
that I became a nurse.
