“Mortals, how pathetic they are, small minded and weak. And to think of it, I used to be one of them, 700 years ago. Now, I hunt them to survive and I could kill anyone of them within seconds. I used to be harmless, now I am a brutal killer. Yet, to my knowledge, I am the only one of my kind. Well, there is one other. The one who made me what I am now. He left me, oh so long ago, helpless and alone. Long have I searched for others like myself. However, like me, they keep themselves hidden. Some day I’ll find another, some day . . .”
Rayne watched the new girl from her table. She studied everything about her, from her black, shoulder length hair, to her unusually pale skin. From her reddish brown eyes, to her fingers, which all had silver rings on them and black painted nails. She was sitting by herself, staring at her hands. Rayne thought it was unusual that the girl wasn’t eating anything.
“Hey! Wha’ch look’n at?”
Helen sat down across from Rayne, blocking her view of the new girl.
“Oh… uh…. at the new girl. What have you heard about her?” Rayne asked, knowing Helen, her good friend, was the top girl at gossiping and would have at least some information about the girl.
“Well,” Helen took a bite out of her hamburger. “I heard she moved here from Queens, I’m not sure if that’s true. Amy Colton said that she was a little off in the head if you know what I mean. Then Jaime said, you know her, you two met once. Anyway, hey! Where are you going?! ” Rayne got up and picked up her food tray.
“I going to talk to her.”
Rayne walked towards the round table where the new girl was sitting.
“Hi, anyone sitting here?” Rayne asked her. The girl looked up at her and shook her head. Rayne flipped long red hair and sat down.
“So, you’re new here.”
The girl nodded.
“What’s your name?”
“Eve.” Her lips revealed her canine teeth, which where unusually long and pointed.
“That’s a pretty name!”
Rayne thought of something else to ask Eve.
“Where did you move from?”
“I moved from Queens.”
Helen’s information had been right.
“Oh, I use to live there.”
Eve smiled to her self and said, “The food was good there.”
“Yeah,” Rayne said slowly. She looked back to Helen and mouthed the word “weirdo” to her. When she turned back she saw a boy walking towards them. Rayne knew him but couldn’t think of his name. “Hi,” he said, sitting down next to Eve.
“You’re the new girl, right?”
Eve did respond to him in anyway.
“I’m Seth, the coolest guy in this school.”
Eve did not look impressed.
“So do you have a name or do I just call you ‘baby’?”
Eve didn’t answer.
Seth moved in closer to Eve. “So baby, are you interested in taken a ride with me in my car tonight? I know this place where we can be all alone.”
Seth put his arm around Eve. In one quick swift move, Eve stood up, grabbed Seth by the throat and lifted him out of his seat. Eve lifted Seth so high that his feet were barely touching the ground.
“Listen well, for I will not say this again,” Eve said in a calm yet, angry tone.
The whole lunchroom fell silent and was now staring at the scene.
“Don’t touch me, don’t talk to me, don’t even look at me again.”
Seth gasped for air.
“If you do, I swear you will not live long enough to see another day or night. Do I make myself clear?”
Seth nodded, his face was pale blue.
Eve let go of him and he stumbled backwards. Bewildered, he breathed in air, and slowly the color returned to his face. Then, he quickly rushed out of the lunchroom. Eve slowly sat down and everyone started talking again.
“That is what happens to people who get in my way,” Eve said to Rayne.
“Well…. uh, goes to show that you can take care of your self.” Rayne said nervously.
“I’ve been alone of most of my life, I don’t depend on anyone else to take care of me.”
“Oh,” Rayne said, shifting in her seat.
“I suggest you stay out of my way too. I don’t wish to have any friends.”
Rayne nodded and quickly got up and walked away, forgetting her food tray at the table.
Music blared from his stereo has he play an invisible guitar.
“Seth! Turn that thing down now!!!”
His mother yelled. Seth stopped playing his guitar and turned the volume down. He looked over to his clock. It read 11: 56. Seth walked over to his closet and searched through a pile of clothes for a pair of sweat pants. As he looked, he heard his bedroom window open, letting in the cold wind. Seth turned and looked at the window. With his sweat pants in his hand, he walked over to it. He slowly closed the window. He stared at it, wondering how it had opened. Then he shrugged and pulled off his shirt and pants. He pulled on his sweat pants. He took one last look and walked back over to his closet for a shirt. Suddenly, someone grabbed him from behind and pushed him against the wall. Someone whispered into his ear.
“Goodnight...”
Seth felt something pierce his neck. He was about to yell for help, when everything went black.
Rayne walked through the glass door of her school. Helen came rushing up to her.
“Rayne, did you hear?”
“Hear about what?”
“Oh my gosh it’s all over the news!! Seth Daisuke was killed last night!!!”
“Oh my god, are you for real?”
“Yes! He died from blood loss . . . and there were two holes on his neck. The police think they’re a bite mark.”
“How do you know all this?”
“Seth’s cousin is telling everyone.”
Helen talked about Seth’s death as they walked to Rayne’s locker. They were almost there when…...
“She did it! She kill Seth!!!” someone yelled.
Rayne turned to see a blonde haired girl pointing at Eve.
“You saw her yesterday!!! You heard what she said!! She did it!! She killed him!!”
A crowd formed around the two girls, like a fighting ring. Everyone strained to see what was going on.
“You treatened to kill him yesterday! And now he’s dead!! You did it!! You killed Seth!!”
“I’m not wasting my time with you.” Eve turned and pushed her way through the crowd.
“Don’t walk away from me!!”
The girl rushed forward and pushed Eve from behind. Eve stumbled a little, then regained her footing. She slowly turnd and faced the girl. The girl made a move to slap her. In a blur, Eve caught the girl’s wrist before it made contact with her face. Eve bent her hand backwards. The girl started whimpering in pain. Then with almost no effort, Eve pushed the girl sending her sliding across the floor.
“You will regret you ever laid eyes on me.” Eve turned and walked away as the crowd parted for her. Rayne ran after her.
“Hey, how are you do’in?!” Rayne asked her.
Eve looked sightly disgusted.
“Fine, I suppose,” Eve answered coldly.
“So, what’s your first class? Maybe we have the…..”
“You don’t get it do you? Everyone thinks I’m a killer! Doesn’t that scare you?”
“No.”
“Well, it should.”
“Why should I be scared of you?”
“Because, I’m not what I seem.”
“I still didn’t see why I should be scared of you.”
“Because I’m dangerous!”
“Why are you dangerous?”
Eve didn’t answer.
“Why are you dangerous?”
“Leave me alone!!”
Eve rushed away, leaving Rayne alone at the top of the stairs.
“Open your books to page…107.” The teacher said.
Rayne kept glancing over at Eve. She wasn’t reading, just staring at the book with wide eyes. She gripped the sides of her desk, beathing hard, pale as a ghost. Suddenly, she shot up from her desk. She quickly walked up to the teacher’s desk.
“Ms. Kishu, may I go to the nursre’s office? I feel dizzy.”
“Yes, Eve, take as much time as you need.”
Rayne waited and few minutes after Eve left, got up and walked to Ms. Kishu’s desk.
“Ms.Kishu, can I go the restroom?”
“Yes, but hurry up.”
Rayne slowy walked down the hall, alert to every sound she heard. She had a strong feeling Eve wasn’t going to the nurse’s office. Rayne turn the corner just in time to see a door slam shut. Rayne run to the door, her heart racing. When she reached it, she took a deep breath and flung the door open. She gasped. Inside was the lifeless body of a janitor. She also so saw Eve, biting into the neck of a blond haired girl. Eve dropped the girl and smiled at Rayne. In the blink of an eye, Eve was behind Ranye, placing her in a armlock.
“Rayne, I told you, didn’t I? I told you to stay away from me. But you didn’t listen. Of coruse, you’re a mortal. Mortals never listen. Rayne, I was willing to let you live! But now, it’s too late. You know. You know what I am, a vampire. If I let you leave here, you’ll tell everyone. No, I can’t let that happen. Sorry Rayne, you had your chance.”
Eve opend her mouth to plung her fangs into Rayne’s neck.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Rayne said clamly.
“And why not?” Eve snapped.
“Because, it is not our ways to drink the blood... of another vampire.”
Eve’s eyes widened.
“You’re lying!!”
“You know I’m not! Don’t hide from the truth!”
Eve released Rayne. Rayne turned and faced Eve smiling, revealing her fangs.
“You’re...you’re a vampire? Like me?”
Rayne nodded with a smile and Eve fell to her knees, crying blood tears.
“I’m not alone anymore.” she whimpered. Eve locked her arms around Rayne’s waist. Rayne stroked her head.
“Are there others?” Eve asked in a whisper.
“Yes, many others. You no longer have to be alone!” Rayne said.
Eve smiled.
“Come,” Rayne said, “we must leave before the mortals find us.”
Eve got up and wiped her tears away. And like little girls, they took each others hand and walked away from loneliness forever.
