Sestina of the Libido
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 07-19-2001

Age Rating: 18 to 127

“Primitive biological urges, usually goal directed” – ah, Libido!
What a wondrous ingredient in the makeup of the psyche;
psychic energy derived from lust – sex drive! Man (or Woman) alive!
What a fantastic procreative influence for species survival!
We want to have intercourse, not only because it feels great,
but because we are driven! Glorious excuse for promiscuity!

Not that everyone (godforbid) indulges in promiscuity;
some stalwart moralists are in total control of their libidos.
Never mind that the magnitude of temptation is great;
(ignore all those primitive urges in your loins and psyches!)
Never mind that your antisocial (pure) behavior threatens species survival;
(and that Libido is the very foundation for why Homo Sapiens is still alive!)

So why aren’t Zinjanthropus, Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon, alive?
Did natural selection home in on the advantages of promiscuity?
Did the horny ones procreate more and thus increase their odds of survival?
With the introduction (mutation?) into the gene pool of stronger libidos,
did the dominant creatures become those with the sex-driven psyches?
Were more progeny produced by those who discovered diverse sex was great?!

Of course, most of us experimental participants recognize sex is great.
Making love is one of those activities that makes us feel so fully alive.
We can thank all those natural, uncontrollable signals from our psyches,
and use them as justification for rampant infidelity and promiscuity!
We are only doing what we were designed to do – responding to our Libidos,
and, of course (lest we forget), doing our part for Mankind’s survival!

An impetus for all animal behavior (including us monkeys) is the instinct for survival.
Our fundamental need to participate in libidinous acts is because this force is great.
So if we are immoral, we have only to blame the power of the Libido,
and our uncontrollable bio-programming - installed to keep our race alive.
We want to be loyal, monogamous, morally righteous, true and blue – not promiscuous;
it’s just that we are the helpless victims of the dictatorship of the sexy psyche!

Which begs the question certainly, are we puppets of some sinister aspect of Psyche?
Is the power of the sex-drive, the procreative instinct for survival,
stronger than ethical and moral values – have we no choice, but to be promiscuous?
Will the world become dominated by those whose control by Id is the greatest?
Do we need to have multiple sex partners to keep the planet alive?
Are we truly animals – unable to resist the natural force that is called Libido?

We can control our psyches, our “Selves”, even though our desire for frivolous sex may be great.
In spite of the drive of our instincts to ensure survival and keep our species alive;
we have the power of choice over promiscuity and need not be ruled by Libido.

Actually Bob, I am attempting (in all my verbosity -LOL!) to show both sides of a controversial coin. But my conclusion (right or wrong), in the envoy (final 3 lines) of the sestina, is that we are truly not just animals. We are not "controlled" by biological imperatives, we are merely "influenced" by them. The final decision: to "fool around" or be loyal to one mate (once chosen and committed to), is ours to make as intelligent human beings. The Libido or sex drive is not in charge, it is just part of our makeup.

Original arguments, at least to me. I've never heard it put quite that way. *grin* Wish I had those when I was younger. *giggle* Now, I'm older... wiser... and more in control. *cough*
