What do these names have in common? Phoebe, Diana, Artemis, Luna, Serenity, Usagi, Serena, Sailor Moon. They are all names of women who have been connected to the moon in some way. Moonatics should recognize all of these names except maybe Phoebe.

Phoebe Diana was the goddess of the moon, of hunting, and of virginity in ancient Rome. She was also sometimes called Luna. Her Greek name was Artemis. She was usually pictured as wearing animal skins and carrying a bow and arrows. She was the twin sister of Phoebus Apollo, the sun god.

The names Diana, Artemis, and Luna show up in Sailor Moon as names of the three cats. I find it humourous that the cat Artemis is male while the goddess Artemis was a female who hated males. Anyway, I believe that the fact of these names showing up in the anime tells us that the makers of Sailor Moon were drawing on Greek and Roman mythology. This becomes ever more clear when one considers the other Sailor Scouts, but that is a topic for another article. :)

Ha, while at Academic Team camp (after having to learn tons of mythology for quiz bowl questions) the difference between Selene and Artemis, Luna and Diana was revealed. Allegedly, Selene (Luna being the Roman counterpart) is JUST the goddess of the moon, while Artemis (Diana) is the goddess of the moon, the hunt, childbirth, and chastity.

I think I read somewhere that Artemis was a male warrior in either Greek or Roman mythology. I'll have to look it up. ^.^;; But, I know for sure that I did read that somewhere (while Artemis IS also a goddess).

I remember in the first Code name Sailor V comic, Artimis got teased by Minako/Mina/sailor V{Venus} about having a girls name. he didn't know what she was talking about, so she explained, and he got embaressed!

Ha ha! Artimes is a girls name!

Cupid was Roman - his Greek name was Eros.

I'll get to Aphrodite in a later article, kay? :)

Yes, CL, that was Artemis/Diana. And Mardi, Mars is the god of war; Cupid is the god of love.
