Herron and Forbrel

  Herron and Forbrel

The bolt of Herron's crossbow hung suspended in the air
seeking out Antonia's heartbeat, she of laughing eyes and looks so fair

Young Herron thought he was the only one, the suitor she had longed for
But Antonia was a vexing contradiction, running hot, then bitter cold in her loving ardor

He sent her dainty gifts and presents, showered her with endless love, an everflowing fountain
But like dandelion seeds blowing in the wind, t'was on his knightly money she was counting

Smitten by Antonia was the Counselor of War, Regal Lord, Rex Lavara
" You're duty bound to serve the kingdom. " Rex's devious plans left Poor Herron unaware

The midnight air was chilly and the new moon bare of light as he made his way across the land
Searching for the Dragon Forbrel, thoughts of courage coming from the King's command

Herron scarcely drew a breath as he heard a crackly voice, then saw the fireball of dragon's breath
Forbrel's body was a hideous green with pickled warts, slithering tail, coalblack eyes, certain death

" Sir Knight, there are no free rides in my territory, what will you give me as a token offer? "
Herron thought for just a minute, then his own two hands to Forbrel he did proffer

Forbrel was a bit surprised as most men thought that dragons were consumers of all human flesh
Succulent perfection, roasted on the bone, best eaten when they're toasty fresh

" You'd offer me the hand of friendship, trust me with your very life? "
" Yes, Forbrel, " Herron answered. " The fates are giving me a second chance to make Antonia my wife. "

" Then stay and tarry for a while, help ease the loneliness of my passing days. "
Young Herron stayed nigh onto a year and learned of dragon thoughts and ways

Forbrel sensed that time was short and Young Herron soon would leave
" I'll fly you to your knightly home, I don't want to see you grieve. "

Forbrel flapped his spiny wings, while Herron rode upon his scaly back
They flew above the mountainside, over rivers wide and valleys filled with haystacks.

They landed in Poor Herron's courtyard just in time to witness Rex Lavara take Antonia as his bride
They both laughed at his drear dismay, " All the kingdom thought that you had surely died. "

" Don't be so hasty with your quarrels, Herron, I have something else in mind. "
Forbrel breathed his firey wrath upon the wedding celebration. " Tasty morsels, " he said as he dined.

Now Wise Herron rules the kingdom with Dragon Forbrel by his side, best of doting friends
If their rules or regulations aren't upheld, the offender's life comes to a crispy end

Ahhh... a true fantasy of epic proportions. I fear my entry shant win this contest, but at least it rates with the ranks of you! *bows low in humble submission*

Most all but the last bit seemed to flow so freely. And it was quite entertaining at that! :-)
