Sailor Moon Column
Mercury Mythology
by Esther Spurrill (Age: 29)

Picture from Roman Gods.

Last week, I talked about the mythology behind Sailor Moon and hinted that I would follow up with the other scouts. Well, here's the first one: Mercury. :)

Called Hermes in Greece and Mercury in Rome, he was the god of travelers, thieves, science, and business, and he was the messenger of the gods. Usually pictured with wings on his heels and temples and a winged staff with two snakes wound around it in his hand, Mercury was said to be the swiftest of all beings.

In one episode of Sailor Moon that I saw, Sailors Mercury and Uranus were running together and Mercury couldn't keep up with Uranus. Apparently, Sailor Mercury doesn't have her namesake's speed.
