Venus was the Roman Goddess of love and beauty. Her Greek name was Aphrodite. She rose from the ocean on a large shell, wearing nothing but her hair. Eventually, she married Vulcan(Greek name:Hephaestus), the god of fire and blacksmiths, and they had a son - Cupid(called Eros in Greece), the god of love.
For some reason, Venus liked to hang out with Mars, the god of war, making Vulcan very jealous. Maybe that's where the saying "All's fair in love and war" came from?
Sailor Venus has echoes of her mythological namesake. For example, her attacks "Venus Love Me Chain" and "Venus Love and Beauty Shock" echo the fact that Venus was the goddess of love and beauty.
