Sailor Moon Column
Mars Mythology
by Esther Spurrill (Age: 29)
copyright 02-11-2003

Age Rating: 1 to 127

Mars was the Roman god of war. His Greek name was Ares. The Romans believed that he was the father of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. He was said to have a fiery temper and was always eager for a fight. When someone was angry, he was said to be worshipping Mars. Also, Mars liked to flirt with Venus, making her husband Vulcan (Gr: Hephaestus) very jealous (Vulcan and Mars were also brothers).

Sailor Mars is actually a lot like her namesake. She has a fiery temper and she likes to flirt with Mamoru/Darien, which makes Serena/Usagi very jealous. However, the god Mars was never associated with fire or archery like Sailor Mars is (Apollo the sun god was "the Archer" of the gods and Cupid and Artemis carried bows and arrows as well, but Mars carried a sword).

You're right CL - Artemis and Cupid did carry bows and arrows, but Apollo was called "the Archer."

I'm confused. I've never heard them called Remulus and Romus before - I have heard Romulus and Remus from many different sources. Maybe there's more than one way to spell the names? Anyway, since the spelling I used is clearly more common, I'll keep it that way, 'kay? :)
