A Mother's Prayer
by Pepper Basham
copyright 03-19-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

His hands reach out to me right now
for comfort and security.
His eyes search mine for guidance
in where to go
and how to see.
As I watch him growing older,
it seems too hard for me to bear.
Please hold my shaking heart
and listen
to this mother's prayer.

He falls,
but now I'm there to catch him;
that will only last so long.
Teach him
You're the only answer,
when he's weak You'll make him strong.
Lead him to Your love and mercy.
Assure him that You're always there.
Show me how to watch and wonder,
as You hear this mother's prayer.

The time is going quickly.
I trust him to Your sure embrace.
Take these efforts that I make each day
to draw him to Your grace.
For one season he is open,
his spirit willing now to hear.
Take my murmurs,
soft and wordless,
echoed in this mother's prayer.

Many things he could one day become;
many paths to walk or take.
But Heaven's way leads to forever.
Direct him to the choice to make.
Create my life,
a living letter,
written strong, vibrant, and clear;
teaching him and strengthening me,
each time I speak this mother's prayer.
