The Ballad of Boromir
by Esther Spurrill (Age: 29)
copyright 03-11-2003

Age Rating: 7 to 127

  The Ballad of Boromir

From Gondor, he came to Rivendell
Seeking a way to win.
He sat in Council with Elrond,
He heard about the Ring.

"Surely we must use this thing
Against the evil Lord!"
They told him "no," he sat back down,
He listened to their words.

But still, he thought perhaps he could
Just use the Ring a bit
To save his land, his father's house;
No harm could come of it.

And when he tried to take the Ring
He found that he was weak:
The Ring was not a simple tool--
Its Master it would seek.

With arrows sprouting from his chest,
He fought for Halflings two
And, as he died, the King knelt by
And told him, "Brave were you."

Esther: I have been an avid reader of J. R. R. Tolkien since the mid '60s when I discovered the Hobbit. Boromir was one of my favorite characters because he was of the race of men. I always get choked up whenever I read the episode in which he was killed in the raid protecting Merry and Pippin. This is a wonderful tribute to the character and to Tolkien. Did you know Tolkien was a pretty accomplished artist as well?
All the best,
Gregory

Hi, I loved this poem, being a very big fan of LOTR (ok mostly of a certain elf *cough Legolas cough*) but this is still an awesome poem. I'm not the biggist fan of Boromir but you made him sound noble in this poem. Great JoB!

I love LOTR, but the part where Boromir died I cried so hard during. Great job with how you portrayed it!
