The Northern and Southern Lights (Aurorae: Borealis and Australis)
by Betty Eskdale (Age: 63)
copyright 03-19-2003

Age Rating: 10 to 127

Ancient lights in winter skies
Undulating draperies of colour play;
Repetitive sheetflashes like lightning
Overwhelming those who observe
Resonating,tinkling,whishing sounds thrill the soul
Awesome presentation;Nature’s paint pot gone wild.

Blazing cold frenzy
Overpowering the spirit of man
Reaches from the heavens like searchlights
Electric pink, mauve,aqua,green, yellow and rose;
Aurora Borealis in the North, Australis in the South.
Light play in the firmament
Inspiring travellers on land and in Space
Spectacular mystery.

Amorphous too in the southern skies
Upside down to us, a mirror image
Stars pinning the sheerest gossamer sheets
Trails of light, coming, going
Rainbows gone wild in the night sky.
Acclaimed, investigated
Little understood
Illumination.
Static discharge spirals, shimmers like tinsel strips.

Thanks for the reminder. I recall seeing them once as a small child.

Nice work,Betty. The sparseness of your descriptions adds to the out-of-this-world tone and gives the writing a style (aptness?) that is impressive and easy to relate to, even if one has never experienced the sight of these wonderful phenomena of the universe. Thanks for taking me there!

You caught the beauty and magnificence of the phenomenon. Nice work.

Beautiful work, Betty. THe rythm is amazing and the imagery is wonderful. I love it.

Bewdy, Betty. All it needs is to have a backdrop of the Northern Lights swishing and shimmering like curtains, crackling with their movement.

Like it a lot. Also see the Northern lights a lot out here away from the city lights! I am priveleged.

little sis
