Love
not the 'sweep you off your feet' feeling,
breathless moments, or tingling hands and heart;
but the peaceful stillness
of staring into each other's eyes:
quiet and knowing with no words.
Love,
not the heated pass-away passion,
one-night fancy or front door kisses with numb lips;
but hands embracing
along a forever walk,
content to hold or let go: Certain.
Love,
not the fear of losing,
holding so tightly with chains of jealousy;
but freedom to live
with patched-up wings: Faithful,
a smile or touch of security.
Love,
not a feeling but a choice,
not a fancy, but a commitment
of the heart, spirit and mind;
to give and receive
rejoice and weep,
wound and be wounded,
but through it all live more deeply
and passionately than the most magical
story or fairytale.
