My heart starts racing, fear abounds,
As a dorsal fin I spy,
A shark is coming toward us,
And I think that I shall die!
The captain laughs and calls me dumb,
Tells me, "Sit back and wait"
And watch the sky as it comes near,
While a story he relates.
**************************************
He says that as a young man,
He was caught up in a storm,
His boat was tossed and capsized,
Those same fins caused HIM alarm,
He fought with the cold water,
Till he could fight no more,
Then felt his body moving,
Somehow gently toward the shore.
***************************************
Cap lovingly looked upward,
And then, as if on cue,
What I had thought to be a shark,
Came closer into view.
It jumped so high into the air,
It almost seemed to fly,
And nodded, or it seemed it did,
As it went swimming by.
*****************************************
Without a pause, "Ole Cap" went on,
To tell how he was saved,
By two most friendly dolphins,
Of their virtues, he just raved.
They sensed his desperation,
Quickly tuned into his plight,
Positioned on each side of him,
They guided him upright.
Till he had soon reached safety,
And his head laid on the sand,
"Can't figure out why folks say,
'Dogs are man's best friends!"
For no animal upon this land,
Or in the water too,
More closely mirrors mankind,
As our friends, the dolphins do.
In fact, he said if it be told,
I'm sure that you will find,
They've improved upon the attitude,
Set up by dear mankind.
They work together as a team,
Share feeding, work and fun,
They're friendly, kind and playful,
All good things rolled into one.
They're quick at sensing danger,
They are helpful to a fault,
They are trusting and not jealous,
As companions, worth their "salt".
Unique to this graceful creature,
Beyond it's perpetual smile,
And it's willingness to help,
And always "go the extra mile",
God bestowed just to the dolphin,
What mankind can't master yet,
Friendship that seeks no advantage,
Giving......with no thought to get.
