Michaelangelo
by Lyle Berry (Age: 61)
copyright 04-09-2003

Age Rating: 18 to 127

  Michaelangelo

Marble blocks became infused with souls ‘neath your hands;
Your chisel blows did more than chip away cold rock.
Your polishing did things beyond the “final touch.”
Breathing life into inanimate stone,
you expressed your faith in God
and your love for mankind.
Where was your strength born Michael,
and how did you hold onto it through the trials you endured?

How could you withstand the pain, the agony -
the punishment of persecution by your enemies
the ignorant trespasses of those who loved you?
Loving man or woman with equal grace and purity -
Man’s perfection of form and Woman’s femininity -
you created a world of people beyond reality -
a race of supermen in stone and oils.
Such incredulous power behind your toils!

“A body of work!” cried old Bertoldo,
and you fulfilled his credo a thousand times over.
Oh yes! God exists - your devotion and perseverance
was dynamic, living evidence of that Truth.
Surely that fierce, bearded gentleman you created upon the ceiling of the Cistine has long since clutched
your work torn soul to His bosom,
and recognizing how deeply you loved Him above all else,
seated you next to him in Eternity.

Truly the Agony and Ecstacy...harsh times with warrior Pope Julius II, the patron of the arts. His commission to Michaelangelo for projects (esp. the Sistine Chapel) was the best thing he ever did. I love Historic references. Nice poem Lyle.

The word come out and just express theirselves to me, because when it comes to just the meaning of "BELIEVING" that is the word, I have a hard time just hearing it, that is with my ears not my heart. Beautiful work, here~~~***8
